This ring is part of a collection of recent work that signifies a new creative direction for me, one that borrows heavily from the moods of sky expanses, the tracery of branches and energy of growth and decay...and as always with my work, it's all about the stones. It's always been about the stones.
Garnets comprise their own mineral classification, with distinct varieties in yellow, orange, red, brown and even vibrant green. Red garnets were one of the most common gemstones used throughout the Roman Empire and by those predominantly northern peoples who then took over the territory of the Western Roman Empire. Throughout history, garnet's beloved rich red symbolized passion, power and creativity. It was historically considered a warrior's stone, often worn for protection and expanded awareness. It is now celebrated as the birthstone of January babies and as loved as a beautiful, durable gemstone and for its myriad industrial and technological uses.
This fabricated sterling silver ring features a gently adjustable design flanked by two focal points: an open seed pod made of silver and 14k recycled gold, and a red wine garnet, set in 14k and orbited by a tiny 14k gold seed. The round garnet measures 7mm in diameter and glows rich red with deep raspberry depth. It is set in a recycled 14k yellow gold bezel, with a solid back for strength and to reflect the depth of the garnet's colour. The seed pod that counters the garnet side is fabricated from sterling silver, sprouting with five handmade recycled 10k yellow gold tendrils that drape into its shallow bowl shape. The shank is made from a single tendril of round, 2 mm diameter sterling silver wire that neatly flows into connection with each end.
The span of the ring as shown in the photos measures approximately 1.25" (3 cm) long by .75" (2 cm) at its widest point, and is approximately a US size . As this ring is adjustable, the span can increase or decrease (with the two ends passing one another) as it is gently sized open or closed. To adjust the size, the ring shank can be gently opened by opening the space between the ends, or made smaller by moving the past one another. The smallest size it could be made would be about 5.5; the largest would be about 8.5. The silver throughout the ring has been lightly patinated and highly polished to enhance the details, bezels and shank.
