Words are only painted fire; a look is the fire itself.
- Mark Twain

This pendant continues my work in this weird year (2021) that signifies a new creative direction for me, one that seems to be mirroring the moods of solitude, separation and the intimate, inner study of detail and direction. My inner work seems to have centred on conjuring faith and hope from nothing, finding the sacred in plain moments....but as always with my jewellery work, it's all about the stones. It's always been about the stones. The one-of-a-kind pendant conjures fire and growth through glowing sparks of amethyst, tourmaline and sunstone emanating from its fiery opal heart. This extraordinary palette of stones seems almost trance-inducing, like watching flame; they are so soothing to look at together.

About Fire Opal:
Long admired for its astounding inner fire, opal has been considered magical, protective, and thanks to its shimmering colours that evoke the hues of all the known gemstones, utterly supernatural. Ancient middle American cultures believed that opals represented life and were created in the heavens. Arabic lore said that opal fell to the earth in flashes of lightning. The ancient Greeks believed that opals granted their owners the gift of prophecy and that their inner fire would guard them from illness. To European royalty, opal's brilliance and depth came to symbolize hope, truth and purity, and we now consider this kaleidoscopic stone the traditional birthstone for October babies.

About Amethyst:
Amethyst is a crystalline member of the vast quartz family that can range from palest, transparent lilac to dense, regal, grape-jelly purple, often with quartz elements like banding and crystalline structure and inclusions visible. Like most all quartz stones amethyst has been highly favoured since the Bronze Age, carved into decorations with a high degree of detail including ornate vessels and jewellery like finely detailed intaglios and cameos, faceted beads and prismatic shapes.
It is said to help guard against guilty, self-deceptive and hurtful feelings while enabling sincerity, inner peace and spiritual wisdom. The Romans associated its purple colour to the god Bacchus (the god of wine) and so thought that wearing amethyst would protect you from drunkenness! We now celebrate it as the birthstone for February babies.

About Tourmaline:
Tourmaline has been adored as a gemstone for centuries, but was often mistaken for other coloured gems like emerald and ruby because of its vast colour range. The ancient Egyptians believed that tourmalines were fragments of a rainbow that the crystals broke through as they grew up from the earth! Historically it was worn to strengthen insight and awareness, and was thought to have a strong calming and balancing effect against the stresses of everyday life. It has been considered symbolic of the heart, of love, of the divine feminine, and of the healing of old emotional wounds.

About Sunstone:
Sunstone is a member of the feldspar family, and considered very costly, exclusive and rare until the 1800s when it was discovered and mined more extensively in Norway, Siberia and the United States. Ancient lava fields in the Warner Valley of Oregon were discovered in the early 1900s, yielding beautiful specimens, and it was thought that early Native Americans may have been early collectors of sunstones from this area.
From GIA.edu: "According to Native American legend, the blood of a great warrior – wounded by an arrow - dropped onto pieces of Oregon sunstone. The blood carried his warrior spirit into the stones, coloring them with shades of red and giving them sacred power."
Historically, sunstone is thought to enhance self-respect and self-awareness. It is named for its unending warmth and light, bringing the wearer a sense of abundance, strength and expanded consciousness.

This pendant is made entirely from sterling silver wire and recycled sterling sheet, set with an incredible fire opal that contains a tiny transparent orange landscape within that flashes with electric rainbows, surrounded by soft apricot coloured matrix. A glossy round amethyst, glowing oval tourmalines and a shimmering round sunstone flank its lower edge, while wispy tendrils form a delicate, fluid crown above. Thanks to these extraordinary stones (including the fire opal, which was reclaimed from antique estate jewelry and estimated to be over 50 years old), this necklace is truly one of a kind.

The pendant measures just over 1.25” (34 mm) in diameter, and the stones are set in simple, plain-edged bezels - the fire opal is set with a solid back for strength while the lower stones have open backs to allow the light play in them. Its organic textured surfaces have been polished to a satiny shine shadowed with a deep patina to frame the deep, rich hues of the stones. The fire opal measures 12 x 14 mm, while the amethyst and sunstone measure between 6.5-7 mm diameter, and the tourmalines measure approximately 7 x 9-10 mm).

The pendant floats from two sparkling beaded links of faceted pink tourmaline. It hangs from a 21” (53.3 cm) long, sterling silver figaro link chain, with golden tourmaline beaded clasps at 17” (43.2 cm), 19” (48.25 cm) and 21” (53.3 cm) for a custom fit. It is finished with a sterling silver lobster-claw clasp. I am happy to antique the chain if you prefer a darker look, and I may be able to create a longer or shorter chain option if desired, simply convo me for more details.
