The inspiration:
Where the water meets the sky - aquatic growth - shoreline discoveries - new adventures - fresh air

The materials:
Fluid, organic tendrils of sculpted sterling wire bloom from a spectacular oval kyanite, deeply blue with horizontal colour banding, in this delicate pendant made from gleaming recycled silver.

The history:
Prehnite was the first mineral to be named for a person, Dutch Colonel Hendrik Von Prehn, who was the governor of the Cape of Good Hope during the 1700s. Prehnite was also the first mineral to be described as from South Africa and was considered quite rare until more recently, as more deposits have been discovered in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Prehnite is formed deep within the veins and cavities of mafic volcanic rock, and interestingly can release water when heated. Because of the these characteristics, it became favoured as a talisman against claustrophobic feelings and was believe to help support both acceptance and letting go. This prehnites were sourced from fellow Etsy seller NikMak Crystals, located in Montreal, Québec.

The process:
I have recycled almost all of the silver used to make this pendant; melting sterling scrap down to form silver ingots, flattening and drawing the silver down to plate (and sometimes wire) using hammers and my rolling mill, and then using this newly reclaimed silver to create my work. This under water, botanical-inspired design features a one-of-a-kind kyanite framed by playful silver tendrils enhanced by a bright polish. The stone is neatly set in clean-edge bezel with an open backplate behind it to allow its beautiful colour to be enjoyed from both sides, and the silver throughout has been given a gentle patina for depth and detail. Tiny sterling rings connect the pendant to its delicate chain, which is finished with a light-weight sterling silver spring-ring clasp and faceted sapphire beaded links at 16” (41 cm), 18” (46 cm) and 20” (51 cm) for an customizable fit.
