The inspiration:
Elevated but grounded - ancient moss and new growth - sunlight on branches

The materials:
A sparkling moss green sapphire is held in the organic silver flow created by the one-of-a-kind process of sand-casting in recycled sterling.

The history:
Since ancient times, sapphires have symbolized loyalty, truth and nobility. Both royalty and clergy adorned themselves with sapphires for protection, and as a symbol of alignment and blessings from a higher power. Most commonly associated with the colour blue (and being that which all other blue stones are measured against for hue and brilliance), sapphires are found in the fullest rainbow of colours, and while their beauty and strength has been coveted for ornament since their discovery, sapphires are more recently prized for their technological applications: synthetic sapphire is used to make sapphire glass, an incredibly durable, scratch resistant glass used in everything from watches, to car windows, to iPhone lenses! Both natural and synthetic sapphires are second only to diamonds for hardness (a 9 on the Mohs scale) and are a member of the corundum mineral family (along with rubies.)

The process:
Using a simple, square-shank ring blank, I sand-cast this piece in sterling silver that I recycled myself. A single, sparkling moss green sapphire was set in place during the casting process, so it was cradled by the flow of the silver as it poured into the mould. The ring has been sculpted with smooth edges and finished with a deep patina to enhance its cast texture and to contrast the stone’s light. The 4 × 6 mm, oval faceted sapphire is held by the organic soap and flow of the silver, with openings that allow the light to sparkle through. This ring has a pleasing weight, soothing finish and a gorgeous, sparkly stone - it is a joy to wear.

• Stone cut & size: green sapphire, faceted oval, 4 mm x 6 mm

• Ring size: currently approximately US 6.5, with a 3 mm x 2 mm rectangular shank
