Rainbow moonstone hammered silver arc earrings

CA$165.00

The inspiration:
Luminous, magical stones held in striking frames whose twinkling, hammered texture evoke stars in the night sky or moonlight on the water's surface.

The materials:
Glowing white rainbow moonstones that flash with bright hits of blue, framed in deeply textured, geometric recycled sterling silver earrings.

The history:
Rainbow moonstone is actually a light variety of labradorite, a member of the plagioclase feldspar family. While the ancients believed that labradorite was fragments of the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) that had fallen to earth, they believed that moonstone was moonlight that had solidified, and like labradorite, it represented where the earth and and the unseen realms of the universe met. Like labradorite, it has been used as a decorative and jewellery material since the 1800s, and became an important ingredient in early glass and ceramic production to increase the strength and durability of finished pieces.

The process:
These bright rainbow moonstones are set in handmade bezel cups atop semicircles of hammer textured recycled sterling silver. A deep patina enhances the deep texture and round wire frame, contrasting the glow of the stones. The earrings swing from arcs of sterling wire that connects them to rounded earwires made of 20g sterling silver (.8 mm dia/standard width for western ear-piercings.) A pair of clear silicone stoppers is included to keep them securely on your ears. The silver throughout has been polished to a high shine.

Earring width: 24 mm
