The empty blue sky of space says 'All this comes back to me, then goes again, and comes back again, then goes again, and I don't care, it still belongs to me.'
– Jack Kerouac

Kyanite is a wondrous blue stone that often shows marked colour zoning and dramatic gradients of blue through its depths. Discovered in 1789, this relative of andalusite was christened 'kyanite' from the Greek word for blue, 'cyanos', for its intense colour.
Like many gemstones, kyanite is used in many industrial uses such as insulations, abrasives and electronics, but thanks to its fascinating physical structure and luminous chatoyancy (cat's eye effect), it has been celebrated as a gemstone since its discovery. Historically it was thought to strengthen the voice and enhance communication, allowing the wearer to be clearly heard and understood. Its luminous, shimmering blue is soothing to gaze into, and the stone seems to carry its own light within.

These shimmering, glossy kyanite cabochons are set in plain edged, handmade bezels that float in star-studded space. They measure approximately 8mm by 10mm, and are a soft denim-sky blue with ultramarine undertones, glowing with silvery chatoyancy. These stones are securely set with solid backs for strength.
A galaxy of tiny silver beads radiates and revolves around the kyanite, from the trios of tiny granules that evoke constellations of stars against the deep, darkly finished background, to the frame of beaded wire surrounding the stones and extending upwards to connect with the handmade, rounded standard 20g sterling earwires.
The perfect length for a swingy dangle earring, these measure 1.8" (4.6 cm) long by just over .75" (2.6 cm) wide at their widest point. A pair of clear silicone stoppers is included to keep them securely on your ears.
I have recycled almost all of the silver used to make these earrings; melting sterling scrap down to form silver ingots, flattening and drawing the silver down to plate and wire using hammers and my rolling mill, and then using this newly reclaimed silver to create my work.

All of my jewelry is made by me in my cozy home studio and will be shipped to you as shown, beautifully packaged and ready for giving as a gift for someone special (like yourself...?)
