The inspiration:
This limited collection of two-stone necklaces was designed to symbolize your own inextinguishable light: the light you see as yourself and the light that you show to the world.

The materials:
An ethereal rainbow moonstone and a brilliant blue kyanite glow together in a simple, organic setting made from gleaming recycled silver.

The history:
Rainbow moonstone is actually a light variety of labradorite, a member of the plagioclase feldspar family. While the ancients believed that labradorite was fragments of the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) that had fallen to earth, they believed that moonstone was moonlight that had solidified, and like labradorite, it represented where the earth and and the unseen realms of the universe met. Like labradorite, it has been used as a decorative and jewellery material since the 1800s, and became an important ingredient in early glass and ceramic production to increase the strength and durability of finished pieces.

Kyanite is a wondrous blue stone that often shows marked colour zoning and dramatic gradients of blue through its depths. Discovered in 1789, this relative of andalusite was christened 'kyanite' from the Greek word for blue, 'cyanos', for its intense colour. Like many gemstones, kyanite is used in many industrial uses such as insulations, abrasives and electronics, but thanks to its fascinating physical structure and luminous chatoyancy (cat's eye effect), it has been celebrated as a gemstone since its discovery. Historically it was thought to strengthen the voice and enhance communication, allowing the wearer to be clearly heard and understood. Its luminous, shimmering blue is soothing to gaze into, and the stone seems to carry its own light within.

The process:
I have recycled almost all of the silver used to make this pendant; melting sterling scrap down to form silver ingots, flattening and drawing the silver down to plate (and sometimes wire) using hammers and my rolling mill, and then using this newly reclaimed silver to create my work. This graceful, simple design sets the flashy rainbow moonstone atop the shimmering, smooth kyanite in this organic, pendulum-shaped pendant. A trio of tiny beads sparkle down each side of the kyanite. The stones are neatly set in clean-edge bezels on a solid, polished backplate to enhance their beautiful colors, and the silver throughout has been polished and pantinaed for dramatic contrast and shine. A tiny sterling ring connects the pendant to its delicate chain, which is finished with a light-weight sterling silver spring-ring clasp and faceted white tourmaline and blue sapphire beaded links at 16” (41 cm), 18” (46 cm) and 20” (51 cm) for an customizable fit.
