The heart of man is very much like the sea, it has its storms, it has its tides and in its depths it has its pearls too.
- Vincent Van Gogh

This deep, mysterious apatite evokes the colour of surf break, and the strength and simple beauty of creatures that manage to live peacefully within tumultuous conditions.

Found in a wide spectrum from yellow to violet, apatite is a very common phosphate-based mineral, but gem-quality specimens are very rare. It is found very close to us, as a major component of our tooth enamel, and far away from us: traces of apatite have been found in moon rocks collected by the Apollo space program. Apatite was named for a figure in Greek mythology named Apate who was the embodiment of deception, and because this stone was so often confused for other minerals such as fluorite and aquamarine, it was named for this duplicitous character.
Apatite has long been considered to be an artist's stone, clearing mental blocks and stoking creativity.

Shaped a bit like a single flower petal (or maybe a stylized stingray!) these striking, ocean-inspired earrings are made from my own recycled sterling silver, set with deep teal blue apatite cabochons and adorned with flowing linear and beaded details that shine brightly against a deeply darkened background. The 8mm diameter apatites are are set with simple, plain-edged bezels on solid back plates to a clean look and secure setting. They are a deep, dark, slightly translucent teal blue, with one boasting a bit of lighter teal along its top edge. A perfect everyday earring, these measure just over 1.6" (40 mm) long and .7" (18 mm) at their widest, swinging from a pair of my custom-made, rounded earwires. A pair of rubber stoppers is included for secure, comfortable wear.
I have recycled most of the silver used to make these earrings; melting sterling scrap down to form silver ingots, flattening and drawing the silver down to plate and wire using hammers and my rolling mill, and then using this newly reclaimed silver to create my work. The beautiful apatites were sourced from PierreRouge in Marieville, Québec.

All of my jewelry is made by me in my cozy home studio and will be shipped to you as shown, beautifully packaged and ready for giving as a gift for someone special (like yourself...?)
